Are You Ready to Identify the Obstacles that Are Keeping You Stuck?

Sometimes we are fully aware of the habits, wounds, patterns, and belief systems that are holding us back from being fully successful, happy, and prosperous.  Most of the time, however, we may be missing an important piece of information or level of awareness – in fact, all human beings come equipped with blinders that can obscure the issues that we may find uncomfortable to look at head on.  The Stuck Spot Assessment walks you through the process of peeking behind those blinders, in a way that is both gentle and effective.

Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.

What Are Stuck Spots?

Understanding your obstacles is the first step in breaking free from them!

There are four primary sources of Stuck Spots:
  1. Emotional Triggers
  2. Limiting Beliefs
  3. Ineffective Strategies
  4. Underdeveloped Internal Resources

Emotional triggers are events, perceptions, situations and people that create a strong, immediate knee-jerk reaction in us when we encounter them – a reaction that is typically out of proportion to the moment.  Whatever has just happened (someone cutting you off in traffic, for example) has “pushed your buttons” – reopened an old wound, tapped into a deep fear or reminded you of a past trauma or upset. Your emotional reaction is not only about the person who just cut you off in traffic, it's also about all the other times you've been disrespected, treated unfairly, victimized or unpleasantly surprised.  When we are at the mercy of our emotional triggers, we are often caught in a perpetual loop of “fight, flight or freeze”.  This, in turn, causes us to feel out of control, weak, incompetent, powerless, and stressed.

Can you imagine just how much of your confidence, creative energy and personal power is literally held hostage by your emotional triggers? (hint – it's likely a significant amount!)

Limiting beliefs are another form of baggage from our past – these are the decisions that we make about ourselves and the world around us when we are too young to really understand what's going on.  Little kids, especially around 5 or 6 years old, are like sponges – we absorb everything we observe and are told, and we automatically accept it as truth.  If our parents have money problems, we may grow up believing that money doesn't grow on trees and we have to struggle to survive.  If our parents get a divorce, we may think it's somehow our fault, or it's because they didn't love us, and we may grow up believing that we're unlovable or not good enough.  The problem is that these decisions and beliefs are still running our lives today, and they are not only coloring our perceptions, they are also fueling unproductive and inaccurate judgments about ourselves and others.

How many opportunities have you missed out on because you were secretly afraid that you weren't good enough?

Over the years, we have all developed strategies to deal with the challenges, tasks and demands of our lives.  Unfortunately, many of these strategies are based on our limiting beliefs and have been designed to avoid contact with our emotional hot buttons – and the result is not pretty!  It's like trying to build a highway through the mountains, except you're afraid of heights, so you start to dig a tunnel, but your digging muscles aren't very strong, so you start going sideways to clear the trees
and go around the mountain, but then there's a river there and you don't know how to build a bridge, and maybe you're just not supposed to go over that #$*! mountain anyway...  Get the picture?  When our strategies are based on old beliefs, fears and limitations, they are ineffective at best and ultimately self-defeating and destructive.  Here are some common ineffective strategies: procrastination, chronic tardiness, self-medicating with addictive substances or behaviors, playing small rather than fully expressing yourself and utilizing your talents...

How much struggle and frustration in your life is being created because you're clinging to your outdated, ineffective strategies?

Our internal resources include our intuition, self-esteem, sense of purpose, personal values, self-awareness, sense of “okayness”, body wisdom, and an innate feeling of being safe (or, as Einstein put it, believing in a friendly Universe).  These resources may have been stunted or shut down by past traumas or events, and until we can reclaim them, we are operating at far less than our full capacity.  Our internal resources are very much like a psychological version of our immune system – when we have healthy and fully-developed internal resources, we are far less affected by setbacks, disappointment and loss.  Unfortunately, when we have damaged or underdeveloped internal resources, it often creates feelings of inadequacy, chronic anxiety, lack of confidence, apathy and depression – we are heart-sick and soul-weary.  When this is the case, striving to reach a goal is like swimming through molasses – upstream!

Have you ever felt that you weren't being truly and fully yourself, and if you could just figure out where “you” went, you could finally be successful?
